PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association season opener at Vidas Field on Friday night.
The Cougars (4-6-0, 0-1-0 CAA) created a flurry of chances in the attacking third, particularly late in the match, but were ultimately unable to break through.
“Generally, I'm really pleased with our play tonight,” said head coach Christian Michner. “The girls gave a really strong effort tonight. We played very well and created chances; the difference between the two teams was they converted one of their chances and we missed ours. We let down on a couple of key areas defensively on their goal; we weren't sharp enough and didn't clear the ball when we needed to and it cost us.
“It was a strong effort. We'll need to pick our heads up and be ready to go again on Sunday.”
Drexel found the net in the 34th minute when a free kick opportunity allowed them to pile numbers in the box before a restart. The Cougars handled the initial threat, but only cleared the ball partially from danger before Lauren Stollar tucked it into the girl for her third of the season.
CofC put five shot attempts on goal, but reigning CAA Player of the Week Kelsie Fye made five saves to keep a blank slate, her third shutout in a row.
Charleston threatened for an equalizer until the final whistle, and pinned the Dragons in their own defensive third for most of the final 10 minutes of the match, but CofC's scoring opportunities proved fruitless.
CofC will continue CAA road play with a Sunday afternoon soiree at Delaware. The Cougars and Blue Hens are set to kick at 1 p.m. Last season, the Cougars earned their first-ever point in the CAA standings by way of a 1-1 draw with Delaware at Patriots Point.
