CHARLESTON, S.C. – On a special night dedicated to the battle against pediatric cancer, the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell at home to the Tigers of Towson University, 56-52, in front of a supportive crowd at TD Arena.
Three Cougars registered double-digit scoring efforts, as seniors Erin Hall and Christy Hewatt checked in with 13 and 10, respectively, while junior newcomer Jacqueline Luna-Castro also managed 10 points. Sophomore Bre Bolden overcame a tough night shooting the ball to grab eight rebounds, while Mikaela Hopkins – the orchestrator of the night's philanthropic efforts – scored six points and grabbed three boards.
As a team, The College outrebounded their opposition, 44-36, and forced the Tigers in to 14 turnovers, but couldn't hold on to a second half lead as Towson shot 42.6% from the floor –including a 17 point, 10 rebound performance from sophomore LaTorri Hines-Allen.
In an evenly contested first-half that featured nine ties and five lead-changes it was the Cougars who took an early 8-7 lead following a beautiful move on the baseline from Hewatt. From there, no team led by more than four points as late baskets from Bolden and Hopkins tied the game, 23-23, at the halftime break.
The second stanza was equally dogged, as no team led by more than five until a three-pointer from Towson's Dominique Johnson gave the visitor's a 45-39 lead with 8:44 to play in the game. The Cougars managed to cut the deficit to just two with 2:48 remaining, courtesy of a pull-up jumper from Hall, but the Tiger's quickly recovered, knocking down critical late-game free-throws to claim their third conference victory of the season, 56-52.
The true winner of the night's action, however, was the local cancer fighting community who attended the Cougars second-annual Curing Kids Cancer night in droves and donated generously to help put an end to pediatric cancer. Halftime speakers included the mother of local two-year Lachlan Tannery, a who recently underwent a successful bone marrow transplant surgery, as well as other guest speakers from non-profits organizations dedicated to the cause.
Next up for the Cougars is a Sunday afternoon collision with the Huskies of Northeastern University at TD Arena – where tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
