CHARLESTON, S.C. – In their most comprehensive performance of the season, the College of Charleston women's basketball team rolled past the Huskies of Northeastern University on Sunday, 59-38, at TD Arena.
In a game the Cougars (4-13, 2-4 CAA) never trailed in, CofC managed to shoot 43.6%, while holding the Huskies to just 22.2% from the field, including a paltry two-of-24 from three-point land (8.3%). The better team in almost every facet of the game, The College was especially dominant in the paint, where they both out-rebounded (45-41) and outscored (32-18) their Boston-based visitors.
Individually, it was Bre Bolden who stood out, grabbing a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds – while also upping her nationally-ranked steals per game average with a further five thefts. Junior stretch-forward Jacqueline Luna-Castro dropped 11 points and a career-high five blocks, while post players Courtney Gardner and Christy Hewatt proved instrumental as well, combining for 13 points and 11 rebounds.
It was all College of Charleston from the outset as the hosts won the opening tip and immediately rattled off eight of the game's first nine points. A three-pointer from Northeastern's A'lece Mark cut the Cougars' advantage to just three with 13:56 left in the opening frame, but The College quickly responded, going on a 22-6 run to take a commanding 35-19 lead at the halftime break.
Continuing to play some of their best basketball of the season, CofC never led by less than 10 in the second half, withstanding an early Northeastern surge to take their largest lead of the season, 54-28, with 6:08 left in the game. After a late jumper from Northeastern brought the lead to 18, baskets from Bolden, Luna-Castro and freshman center Zoe Wallis closed out the game, giving the Cougars a well-deserved 59-38 victory.
The victory moves the Cougars in to a sixth-place tie in the CAA standings with Delaware and UNCW. CofC sits just one game behind Towson, who currently claims the fifth-place slot with a 3-3 conference record.
Up next for the Cougars is a Thursday trip to Newark, Del., to face the Blue Hens of Delaware University at the Bob Carpenter Center – where tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
