Cougars Sweep Florida A&M, Fall to No. 32 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – College of Charleston men's tennis split its doubleheader in Tallahassee on Saturday, earning a 7-0 sweep of Florida A&M before falling to No. 32 Florida State, 5-1.
Sophomore Vasily Kichigin was the only member of the Cougars (4-2) to win all three matches he competed in today. Against Florida A&M, Kichigin paired up with junior Garrett Gordon to pick up a 6-4 doubles win in the No. 3 spot before moving on to claim a 6-1, 6-1 singles win over Carols Augustin Waitman as the No. 4 seed.
Kichigin stepped on court four again in the afternoon to face Florida State's Terrell Whitehurst. After a hard fought 6-4 victory in the first set, Kichigin went on to earn a 6-1 win in the second, scoring Charleston's only team point against the Seminoles (8-2).
CAA Player of the Week Charlie Ghriskey went 2-1 on the day, earning wins over Florida A&M opponents in singles and doubles. Ghriskey matched up with junior Josh Record to defeat top-seeded Wainer Espinoza and Courage Okungbowa, 6-4. Ghriskey and Okungbowa battled again in singles where third-seeded Ghriskey edged his opponent with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Against Florida State, Ghriskey showed plenty of fight at the No. 3 spot, winning three games in the first set and four in the second, but ultimately giving up a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Jose Gracia.
Sophomore Franz Sydow picked up his second win of the year in singles by keeping his opponent, Florida A&M's Jason Ulacio, scoreless with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory. He later lost to Florida State's Terrance Whitehurst, 6-1, 6-1.
College of Charleston returns home where the team faces another tough opponent, the reigning CAA Champions and 54th ranked UNC Wilmington on Friday at Patriots Point Tennis Center.
