CHARLESTON, S.C. – Erin Hall and Bre Bolden combined for 41 points and 15 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the College of Charleston women's basketball team was narrowly downed by the Elon Phoenix, 75-71, in an exciting Colonial Athletic Association showdown at TD Arena on Sunday afternoon.
In a solid all-around team effort, the Cougars (4-18, 2-9 CAA), fought hard on the defensive end, forcing 13 turnovers, while also shooting over 50% from the field – including a sharp eight-of-15 from behind the arc. Leading the way for the host's was the sensational play of Bolden and Hall, who dropped 21 and 20, respectively. Hall had her best shooting performance of the season, knocking down four-of-six from behind the arc, while Bolden fell just one rebound short of a double-double. In two games this season against the Phoenix, Bolden is averaging 25.0 ppg.
Also playing well for the Cougars was Christy Hewatt and Jacqueline Luna-Castro, who each dropped eight, while freshman point guard Shiclasia Brown dished out a further eight assists in 36 minutes of action.
In a frenetic first-half that saw three ties and eight lead changes, CofC jumped out to a game-high seven point advantage after a deep three-pointer from Luna-Castro with 12:10 remaining in the opening frame. The Phoenix soon fought back, however, as a Coffer triple gave the visitor's a one-point lead with just less than two minutes remaining, before three straight Cougar baskets handed Charleston a 39-36 lead heading in to the break.
Equally exciting, the second-half opened with a 9-2 Elon run, giving the Phoenix a five point, 46-41 lead at the under-16 media timeout. Ever-resilient, the Cougars then clawed back to tie the game following a free-throw from senior Breannah Davis-Bloom, but the visitor's soon recovered to claim an eleven point stake with just over ten minutes to play. The advantage would last just three minutes though; as three consecutive triples from Hall helped the Cougars take their first lead of the second half, 66-64, with 5:37 remaining in the game.
It was then, with the game on the line, that the Cougars found baskets difficult to come by as Elon played stout defense and knocked down pressure-packed free throws to seal their 14th win of the season, 75-71.
Up next for The College is an Education Day showdown with Hofstra next Friday on John Kresse Court, where tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. In last season's Education Day game, the Cougars down eventual NCAA tournament participants and CAA Champions, James Madison, in front of a raucous crowd at TD Arena.
