CLINTON, S.C. – College of Charleston men's tennis struggled early in doubles and singles but was able to narrow the gap late in the match in a 4-3 loss to Presbyterian College on Tuesday afternoon at the Templeton Tennis Center in Clinton, S.C.
Tight matches in all three doubles contests resulted in a sweep for PC. Seniors Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman and junior duo Josh Record and Garrett Gordon yielded 8-6 decisions on courts one and three, respectively. Zack Lewis and Charlie Ghriskey forced PC's No. 2 team of Diego Manzanas and Joel Roberts into a tiebreak before eventually falling 8-7.
PC (18-8) then reeled off singles victories on courts two, five and six to take a 4-0 lead and cement its first victory over Charleston since the Blue Hose program moved to Division I in 2007. Lewis stopped the Blue Hose run with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Manzanas at the No. 4 spot to claim his 15th singles victory of the year.
Sophomore Vasily Kichigin built on Lewis' momentum with a 7-5, 6-4 win on court three. The St. Petersburg, Russia native, who is 14-7 on the year, has a perfect 5-0 record when playing at the No. 3 spot. Allanic, who was named the CAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week earlier in the day, finished the day for the Cougars with a come from behind, three-set victory at the No.1 position. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Allanic regained control in the second set with a 6-2 victory and then edged PC's top-seeded Joel Roberts 10-8 in the third to win the match and reduce the margin of defeat to one point for the Cougars. Allanic has won three straight since moving to the team's top spot last week.
College of Charleston (13-9, 3-1 CAA) will have more than a week to prepare for the 2015 CAA Men's Tennis Championship, held on April 17-19 at the College of William & Mary. Stay tuned to cofcsports.com for more information on the championships.
