CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston volleyball team used 12 team blocks including six from senior Kayla Tronick to sweep Sam Houston State 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-22) in The Courtyard by Marriott North Charleston Classic at TD Arena on Friday.
“I thought our blocking was strong tonight,” head coach Jason Kepner said. “We played well throughout the match and fought them off at the end. We knew they were going to fight until the end, we did a good job of not letting them back into the match.”
Four of Tronick's career-high six blocks came in the critical third set. The senior from Hutchinson, Minnesota also posted five kills. Sophomore Krissy Mummey recorded a new season-high with 11 kills and hit .529 for the match. Mellisa Morello tallied eight blocks and nine digs.
The Cougars (7-5), whom improved to 4-1 at home this season, cruised to a pair of 25-17 wins in each of the first two sets. The team finished strong, hitting .345 in the final frame and holding SHSU (5-7) to a .083 hitting percentage for the match. It marked the fourth time in the last five matches that CofC held its opponent to a hitting percentage of .162 or lower.
Freshman Allison Beckman distributed the ball well throughout the match and finished with 33 assists. Kennedy Madison and Maddie Hills chipped in with seven kills each. Hills also had five blocks on the night.
The College will return to action on Saturday as it takes on Bryant at 1 p.m. before squaring off with No. 23 Minnesota at 7 p.m.
