Following their successful start to the season in Boone, the College of Charleston women's tennis team wrapped up their trek through North Carolina with two matches Monday, splitting their outings against No. 71 Wake Forest and NC A&T.
“We're pleased to have wrapped up our opening weekend 2-1,” Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “This has been a great opportunity for the ladies to build chemistry and bond with one another on their first big road trip of the season.”
The Cougars began the morning drawing the nationally ranked Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem, and Wake Forest demonstrated just why they were billed as the No. 71 team in the country by way of a 7-0 win. Wake Forest swept doubles play convincingly, led by the No. 51 ranked duo of Andrea Retolaza and Luisa Fernandez, who pulled off the 6-0 shutout over Mara Argyriou and Katherine Schofield.
Singles play was another rout for Wake Forest, but the Cougars had a few bright spots in their losses. Schofield valiantly fought tooth and nail in the second set, before finally succumbing in her second flight matchup with Kimmy Guerin, 1-6, 6-7 (3-7). Likewise, Diana Colen gave WF's Xue Zhang all she could handle in the first set of her sixth flight matchup, ultimately falling 5-7, 1-6.
The Cougars then booked over to the Centennial Indoor Club in High Point, N.C. for a date with NC A&T, and they bounced back in a big way with a 6-1 victory.
Fieldsend and McNeely improved to 2-1 on the year with a 6-2 win over the pairing Khalia Powell and Sheyla Fabiana Ramirez. Fieldsend would carry the momentum into singles action, picking up the victory over Angelica Maria Ochoa Martinez by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Following her loss against Wake Forest, Schofield traded in Mara Argyriou for fellow senior Brooke McAmis in doubles action, and the two proceeded to a 6-1 win over Martinez and Nadia Hilton-Adams before retiring for the afternoon.
Lastly, it was a day of firsts for CofC. Following an injury-ravaged fall season, sophomore Helena Nyeikos made her 2016 debut with a win, knocking off Hilton-Adams in singles play with a score of 6-1, 7-5. Meanwhile, freshmen Diana Colen and Sarah Zschunke picked up the first singles wins of their collegiate careers, knocking off Ramirez (6-1, 6-4) and Staisha Cain (6-1, 6-2) respectively.
“We got a lot of experience on some unfamiliar indoor courts this weekend, and identified a few areas to improve on,” Anastopoulo said. “Now it's time to get back to the lab and prepare for what's next.”
The Cougars will at last return home to the Lowcountry, with four days off before their next action, a Saturday morning faceoff in Columbia against USC.
