CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For the second time this weekend, the College of Charleston women's tennis team (2-3) came very close to knocking off a strong road opponent, but ultimately fell 4-3 to the Charlotte 49ers (3-0) at the Phillips Tennis Complex.
Both doubles and singles play came down to the wire Sunday. The top two doubles flights split, with Rachel McNeely and Liza Fieldsend falling 6-3 in flight one to Tai Martin and Victoria Pahlett, and Mara Argyriou and Katherine Schofield rebounding to even things up 1-1 with a 6-4 win over Sierra Stone and Fleur Holtkamp in the second flight.
That set up a deciding third flight scrap between Sarah Jane Jones and Sarah Zschunke for the Cougars and Macy Vonderschmidt and Tyler Baker for the 49ers. The match was hard fought, ultimately requiring a tiebreak to determine a winner, but at the end of the day the Charlotte duo prevailed 7-6 (5) to secure the doubles point.
Liza Fieldsend rebounded from her loss in doubles play to capture the first flight win over Tai Martin 6-1, 6-3. Mara Argyriou pushed her spring season singles record to 4-1 with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Fleur Holtkamp in the fifth set, while Helena Nyikos remained undefeated on the year with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alexandra Lee.
Though the Cougars had three points secured, they couldn't quite come up with the clincher they needed in the remaining flights. Katherine Schofield's season-record against Charlotte opponents dropped to 2-2 with a second flight loss to Victoria Pahlett by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Brooke McAmis gave Macy Vonderschmidt a run for her money in the first set of the third flight matchup, taking it to a tiebreak loss 7-6 (5) before falling 6-3 in the second set.
With the duel knotted up at 3-3, Rachel McNeely squared off against Tyler Baker in the fourth and deciding flight. McNeely got off to the early 6-3 edge, but Baker came back to take the second set 6-4. In the third and final set, it was Baker who won the day, prevailing 6-3 to give Charlotte the win.
The Cougars return home for a couple days before trekking back out for a mid-week matchup against Coastal Carolina (4-1). That match is slated for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
