MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – As though a 4-0 win over cross-town rival Charleston Southern (2-2) wasn't sweet enough, the College of Charleston women's soccer team enjoyed a record-setting night from goalkeeper Lauren Killian as the Cougars rose to 2-3 on the season.

• Killian was perfect in net for her second straight shutout by way of a six-save performance. Her final stonewall of the evening put her at 225 for her career, which set the new CofC All-Time record for saves in a career, breaking Alice Keeney's mark of 224.

“Lauren Killian is one of the best goalkeepers in the conference,” head coach Christian Michner said. “She brings such a high level of confidence to the team that plays in front of her, and in moments tonight where we were a little bit rattled, she settled us down. She's a tremendous keeper, and hats off to her.”

• Laura Ortega created two goals for the Cougars thanks to her precise deliveries off of corner kicks. She did so in the 14th minute to get things rolling for the College, and struck again in the 80th minute as Rio Speller-Drews headed in CofC's third goal of the game.

• Jessica Schifer finished with two goals on the night, getting the first and last word of the game. Her first was a header off an Ortega corner which wound up being the game-winner. Then, with less than a minute to go in regulation, Schifer fired a cannon shot from the top of the box for her third of the season and the Cougars' fourth goal of the game.

• With only a 1-0 lead and time ticking down in the first half, freshman Jessica Preedom found Suzi Vallez in the box, who sent it in low off the inside post in the 44th minute. The two tallied their first points of the season on the play.

“It took us a little while to get into our rhythm tonight,” Michner said. “Credit to Charleston Southern, that's the best team I think they've had since I've been here, they were good.”

“Jessica Schifer was a different class tonight, her and Laura Ortega up front really combined well,” Michner said. “Rio scored a huge goal as well, and hit the post on a couple other efforts. I'm really happy with how we're attacking, but certainly when you get a shutout against a cross-town rival, it's even better.”

The Cougars, who have now outscored their opponents 7-0 in their last two games, will now eye this Sunday's road trek up the beach to face off with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-1-1). That contest is slated for September 4 at 7 p.m.
