Cougars Win Sixth Straight, Dump Dolphins 3-1

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team (6-3) picked up a win for the sixth game in a row, getting on the board early and often to ensure the 3-1 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins (2-6).
• Though she wasn't credited with any assists on the night, Laura Ortega was at least partially responsible for every one of the Cougars' goals. The first was a goal of her own in the 16th minute, an unassisted strike from above the box to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The second goal came off an Ortega set piece, which was juggled by Rachel Kim before being finished off by Rio Speller-Drews (31'). The third and final goal had Ortega inject the ball into the box from left of net, and after a ricochet, Ali Freitas chipped the ball up between the cross bar and the reach of the keeper (49') to make it 3-0.
• Jacksonville managed to break through in the 78th minute when Jessica Shaffelburg fed Danielle Henry, who managed to beat Lauren Killian to make the game 3-1. Killian's monumental shutout-streak finally came to a close at 532 minutes, 15 seconds, the third-longest in school history. Killian had an otherwise terrific game, earning five saves.
• The game was incredibly scrappy as evidenced by the five yellow cards issued throughout. JU's Zoe Zinnis received two of them, leading to her permanent exit a little past the midway point of the second half.
• The Cougars won six games in a row for the first time since 2008, when that team picked up wins in their first seven games of the season. That team went on to finish 12-5-4 overall. This is only the third time the CofC women's soccer program has ever won at least six in a row, the other streak coming during the 2004 season.
"It was a really great performance from the Cougars tonight," head coach Christian Michner said. "Every player contributed to the win and we were dominant for the entire 90 minutes. I am pleased with our effort and we created so many good chances to score, we just need to finish on more of those opportunities. The team is playing really well right now and we're excited to get back to Charleston and lace 'em up again on Sunday."
The Cougars return home to face the Radford Highlanders (1-3) on Sep. 18 at 1 p.m. at Patriots Point.
