Seventh Heaven: Cougars Extend Streak, Beat Radford 1-0

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team (7-3) picked up another hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Radford Highlanders (2-4) on Sunday, and in doing so picked up their seventh straight victory heading into conference play.
• Much like the games against Stetson and The Citadel, CofC managed to get a healthy dose of chances, but to no avail through the first half, this time largely in part due to Radford keeper Courtenay Kaplan coming up big in frame (nine saves). That all changed in the 69th minute however, when after a failed free kick, the ball was fed to Laura Ortega left of frame. Ortega put a move on her defender and distributed it into the box, where a streaking Schiffer dove to get a toe on it and sail it in to give the Cougars the 1-0 edge. That score would stand up as the game-winner. Schifer and Ortega now have a combined 23 points on the year.
• The current winning streak is tied for the second-longest in school history, matching the 2008 team that went 7-0 to start the season. The only longer streak came in 2004 between October 10 and November 4, and lasted eight games.
• Lauren Killian picked up her fourth solo-shutout of the season on a relatively slow outing, only being called to action for a pair of saves. Her career-total reaches double-digits (10), tying her with Katie Tate (2009-10) for fourth in school history.
• The Cougars once again controlled the shot differential, leading 8-0 in the category and finishing the game up 15-5. Over the course of their winning streak, the Cougars have outshot opponents 150-55.
"The girls are flying right now, playing really hard and getting great results," head coach Christian Michner said. "We set a challenge for ourselves a few weeks back to see if we could finish off our non-conference with seven in a row, and we did that. Radford dug in on defense, and it's tough to wear down all 11 players, but as the game went on, spaces opened up and we were able to score a nice goal."
The Cougars make their CAA debut in a week, when they host the UNCW Seahawks (6-2-1) on Sunday, Sep 25 at 1 p.m.
"The purpose of our non-conference schedule is to make sure that we're prepared for conference play," Michner said. "It's a very difficult conference, one of the best in the country. Based on the schedule we played, we know we're ready for that test. We look forward to a good week of training and getting started with UNCW."
