Dragons Up Next as Cougars Jet for Philadelphia

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (5-11, 2-3) will face a staunch road-test against last year's CAA Tournament runner-up Friday, when they travel to Philadelphia to do battle with the Drexel Dragons (12-4, 3-2) at 7 p.m.
The Cougars look to rebound from a 61-59 heart-breaker at Towson last Sunday. Everything was going right for the Cougars through the opening half, as CofC pushed the lead to a game-high 13 before entering the locker room up 38-29. But the Tigers slowly chipped their way back into the game, and things finally came to a head when Raven Bankston converted a layup in the waning seconds to give Towson the eventual game-winner.
Despite the defeat, both Breanna Bolden (10-13) and Tanisha Brown (15-10) ended up with double-doubles. It was just the second time this season that two Cougars had recorded double-doubles in the same game, and it was CofC's 12th and 13th of the season.
The Cougars and Dragons will play one another for the seventh time on record. Though the Dragons control the 4-2 advantage in the series, it was the Cougars who had the last laugh in their previous encounter. Jackie Luna-Castro went off for 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, going a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line. In contrast, Drexel's Sarah Curran had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night (3 of 21 FG), and the Cougars fended off the Dragons for the 49-46 win.
At 12-4 on the season, the Dragons sport one of the best overall records in the CAA. Like the Cougars however, Elon has handed Drexel defeat in both meetings already, squeaking out a 48-45 win in Philadelphia before earning the 75-65 win in Alumni Gym. Drexel's one other CAA-showing at home this season resulted in a 58-48 victory over Towson.
Curran leads the Dragons in scoring (15.1 PPG), and does so by way of shooting a very efficient 46.8 percent from the field. Meghan Creighton is the team's top facilitator from the point with 61 assists on the year, while Jessica Pellechio is the squad's number two scoring threat with 12.3 PPG. Not known as an elite rebounding team, no Dragon player averages more than five rebounds per game.
