CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team hosts the first home games of their CAA slate this weekend, facing off against William & Mary (11-1, 1-0) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and UNCW (5-7, 0-1) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
The Cougars come off a road-loss to Elon in their conference-opener on Monday. CofC got off to a 22-14 lead through the first quarter, but the Phoenix rallied in the second to go into halftime with a lead that they would never relinquish. Breanna Bolden stuffed the stat sheet with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in defeat, while Brianna Boyd posted a game-high ten rebounds, adding eight points, a pair of steals and a pair of blocks.
Bolden has continued her march through the history books in what's been an excellent senior season so far. She currently ranks No. 10 in the nation in steals per game with 3.58, and continues to put the CofC Division I Era career steals record out of reach, with her tally sitting at 278. What's more, she currently ranks No. 12 on the CofC All-Time scoring list at 1342 career points, just 25 back of No. 11 Jodie Olofson (1995-99).
The Cougars hold a 2-6 all-time record against William & Mary in a series that dates back to 1997. The last time CofC hosted the Tribe, W&M prevailed with a 66-40 win despite 17 points and seven steals from Bolden.
The Tribe stand at 11-1 this season, which is the best overall record in the conference. Their 11 wins have all come consecutively, following a season-opening loss to St. John's. Junior center Abby Rendle turned heads earlier this year against East Carolina by recording a triple-double with blocks, and leads the nation in blocks per game with 4.25. The matchup with the Cougars will feature the two most accurate scorers in the CAA, as Tanisha Brown (47.3% FG) and Alexandra Masaquel (48.1% FG) will go head to head.
The College holds a 10-9 record against the Seahawks dating back to 1990. Last season, the Cougars won all three of their meetings against UNCW, winning 64-53 on the road, 68-24 at home and 71-62 in the opening round of the CAA Tournament. The Cougars' home-victory set a school record for fewest points allowed to an opponent, surpassing the 17-year old record of 27 points allowed to Jacksonville in 1999.
The Seahawks have gone 5-7 through their opening 12 games, and enter the weekend having lost two straight to Tennessee and James Madison. Madison Raque is the team's only player to average double-digit scoring, while Jordan Henry and Rebekah Banks control the interior, averaging a combined 15 rebounds per game between the two of them. UNCW is slated to host Delaware on Friday night before heading to Charleston for their Sunday showdown.
