CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (1-1) will jaunt off to the Great Lakes State this weekend for a pair of noon-games against Central Michigan (1-1) on Friday and Michigan State (2-0).
Both games will be televised, with Friday's game airing on CSN, and Sunday's game showing on Big Ten Network+.
The trip will represent a homecoming for CofC head coach Candice M. Jackson, who played point guard for the Spartans from 2000-04, and served as a graduate assistant in 2005 when the team made it to the NCAA National Championship game.
The Cougars split their opening weekend with a win at home over Lipscomb and a loss at Furman. Shiclasia Brown and Darien Huff each established scoring career highs with 29 and 21 points respectively in single-game outings. Tanisha Brown meanwhile had an excellent opening weekend, averaging a 20-9-6 with 2 steals and a block on 64% shooting over the course of both games. She also recorded her 11th career double-double when she pulled down a 21-12 against Lipscomb.
The Cougars and Spartans have never met in women's basketball, but did meet CMU once before in 2011 at a neutral site contest at Tulane. Four Cougars scored in double-figures in that meeting, led by Megan Fischer's 14 point, nine rebound day. The two squads played to overtime, but the Chippewas pulled away in the end for the 72-69 win.
Central Michigan spit their opening two games of the season, falling to Purdue before bouncing back to defeat Vanderbilt 92-75. The Chippewas come off an impressive 23-9 season that saw them go 15-1 at home. A first-round loss in the MAC Tournament to Western Michigan sent them to the WNIT, where they fell to Wright State 66-64. Presley Hudson and Cassie Breen both average over 20 points per game so far this season, while Reyna Frost is the team's leading rebounder with 13 per contest.
Michigan State has stormed through their first two games of the season, defeating Robert Morris and Oakland with an average margin of victory of 37 points. The team went 21-12 last year, making it to the Big Ten Championship game before falling to Maryland 100-89. The Spartans drew Arizona State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, but lost 73-61. They've had four different players average double-digit scoring for them so far this year, led by Shay Colley's 15-8 average performance.
