Women’s Basketball Opens Season at Home vs. Lipscomb

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team embarks on its 2017-18 campaign this Friday at noon, when they will host the Lipscomb Bisons in their home opener.
The Cougars return nine players, after graduating three from last year's squad. Among them, small forward sensation Breanna Bolden played her final game in the maroon and white last year to cap off a truly outstanding career. The Edgewater, Md. native closed things out as the three-time CAA Defensive Player of the Year, the CofC all-time record holder in career steals (333), and the fourth-most prolific scorer in school history with 1672 points. For CofC, the immediate question will be how they intend to move on without one of the best players in program history leading the way.
"We went through a period of bereavement with Bre not being here, but we moved on," head coach Candice M. Jackson said. "Those who played with her carry a piece of all the things she did and the qualities she embodied, and so I think she'll be very proud of her teammates when she tunes in to watch us."
The College will rely heavily on its three seniors, starting with Preseason All-CAA Second Team selection Tanisha Brown, who averaged 12.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last year while tallying ten double-doubles. Between her and fellow senior Bri Boyd, who tallied two double-doubles of her own before going down with a lower body injury, the Cougars will boast a potent inside presence on both ends of the floor. Shiclasia Brown is the third senior on the team, and will hold things down at the point guard position after demonstrating flashes of a much-improved offensive game last year.
Darien Huff also returns for the Cougars, who's been a steady presence for the Cougars on defense as well as from beyond the arc at the two-guard position. Sophomores Deja Ford and Cailin Dorsey provided an impact off the bench from the guard positions last season, and the College will rely on them more as their games continue to improve.
"We're a young team, but I've been pleased with a lot of the things that I've seen so far," Jackson said. "Obviously in the first game of the season there's going to be some things that aren't perfect, but that's going to come from experience. Overall, I'm really happy with the chemistry that's being built on this team and how we're coming together as a group."
CofC has five freshmen on the squad, four of whom will be available to play this season. Bryanna Goodson and Lexi Maddox already made noticeable impacts in their opening exhibition this year, as Goodson knocked down five of her eight three point attempts and Maddox yanked down seven rebounds in the 80-48 win over USC Aiken. Shai Blanding and Destiny Marshall will also be in the mix to get time at the guard positions.
The Cougars and Bisons have never previously met in women's basketball, and this game will offer CofC a look at a team led by point guard Loren Cagle, who ranked 35th in the nation in assists last season with 176 dishes. CofC will then go on to play three straight games on the road.
"Our motto this year is PUSH: Pursue Until Success Happens, and that's something our team has really taken to heart," Jackson said. "I think success for us is being on the same page with each other for the entire year and giving their absolute best. And by doing all those little things, I think people will be very impressed in what they see."
Admission to Friday's game is free of charge.
