CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's basketball team (4-7) opens conference play at home on Friday against William & Mary (9-2) before jetting up to Maryland to visit Towson (5-6) on Sunday for the opening weekend of CAA competition.
Friday's tilt against the Tribe will take place in the evening at 6:30 p.m., while Sunday's showdown with the Tigers will be a noon affair.
The Cougars wrapped up their non-conference slate in a position of strength, winning three of their last five games dating back to the end of November. Tanisha Brown stepped up in those victories, averaging a team-high 18.6 PPG in those contests and has accumulated two double-doubles as well. Meanwhile, the College has found its success tied to the offensive output of Shiclasia Brown, going 3-0 in games where the senior guard scores in double-digits and 1-7 in games that she does not.
The Cougars were victorious in both encounters with the Tribe last season, most recently winning an overtime thriller on the road in Williamsburg. The Cougars and Tigers split their contests in 2017, with the home team winning on each occasion. All told, the Cougars are 4-6 all-time against the Tribe and 3-7 against the Tigers.
William & Mary posted the best non-conference record in the CAA at 9-2 and peeled off seven wins in a row, but dropped their most recent game 80-74 in overtime to Norfolk State. Bianca Boggs is the team's leader on offense with 16 PPG, but Abby Rendle is the team's real motor, averaging a 13-8 along with five blocks per game, which leads the nation. Earlier this season against ECU, Rendle pulled down a triple double, which was the second of her career.
Towson is 3-2 at home this year, and drubbed Saint Joseph's 90-66 in their last SECU Arena contest. The Tigers will remain at home all weekend, debuting their CAA slate on Friday night against Northeastern before playing the Cougars. Towson has an imposing front court tandem in Mary Cuevas and Nukiya Mayo, who each average 12 points and nine rebounds. Towson is led by first-year head coach Diane Richardson, who was most recently an assistant at West Virginia.
