Towson and Drexel Await Cougars in Pair of CAA Road Encounters

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team (12-5) hits the road for the first time in three weeks this weekend, when it will head to Baltimore and Philadelphia to take on the Towson Tigers (6-5) and Drexel Dragons (12-3) for two days of crab cakes, cheesesteaks and CAA tennis action.
The Cougars will take on Towson on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in a road affair. They'll then head to Philadelphia for a neutral site showdown with Drexel on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the University of Pennsylvania's Hecht Tennis Center.
Until their most recent matchup with the Clemson Tigers, the Cougars had been on a seven-match winning streak which included four 4-3 victories. During that span, senior Mara Argyriou led the way from the second and third flights of singles play, ripping off six wins and just one loss.
The Cougars have faced off with Towson five times to date, logging a 5-0 record against the Tigers while outscoring them 29 sets to 1. Though they have a winning record at 6-5, Towson only has the seventh-best winning percentage (.545) in the ultra-competitive CAA. The Tigers have dropped three of their last four matches, with their only win over that period coming at home to Longwood by a score of 6-1. Lucy Gloninger (6-1) and Barbora Vasilkova (8-2) have been their most effective singles players this season, competing primarily in flight six and flight four respectively.
The College has only squared off with the Dragons twice on record, with CofC winning both meetings over the last two seasons. At 12-3, Drexel boasts the best overall record in the conference and is tied with the Cougars for the second-highest win total. The Dragons picked up wins in their last two matches against Wagner and NJIT, and prior to a pair of losses to Temple and Penn, had won seven straight. In singles play, the Dragons have been most potent in the middle of their rotation, with Lea Winkler sporting an 8-2 mark in flight four and Clary Rodriguez Cruz riding a 7-2 record in flight five.
These will be just the second and third matches for the Cougars against CAA opponents this year. Previously, they defeated defending CAA champions William & Mary 4-3 at home.
