NEW ORLEANS, LA. – The College of Charleston men's tennis team (6-3) got off to an overwhelming start Tuesday, allowing them to surge past New Orleans (4-3) 4-0 to complete the 2-0 sweep of Louisiana matches.
The Privateers struck first in doubles play, picking up a 6-1 win to put the Cougars on the back foot. It would be the last match CofC dropped, responding with a 6-3 win by the Kusmider brothers in flight three, followed by a 6-2 win by Juan Estevarena and Vasily Kichigin in flight one to capture the point.
The College continued the onslaught in singles play, ultimately winning the day with sound performances from the top three flights. Benedikt Henning got things started with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Federico Boscarino in the second flight to push the match to 2-0. Estevarena followed close behind with a 6-2, 6-3 win in flight one, and Vasily Kichigin won the day with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Federico Staksrud in flight three to win the day and halt the action.
Ryan Khan appeared poised for a win in flight four, and was leading 6-3, 5-3 the CofC win halted his match. In the lower flights, Fernando Ramirez Lascurian and Jake Kusmider were both embattled with three-set thrillers before play came to an end.
The College at last returns to the Lowcountry, and will make its long-awaited home debut against the Richmond Spiders on Friday.
