CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (9-20) begins its postseason quest on Wednesday, when they take on the No. 7 seed UNCW Seahawks (10-19) in the opening round of the CAA Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va. at 2:30 p.m.
The Cougars are no stranger to western Virginia at this point, having wrapped up their regular season on the road a week ago against the James Madison Dukes, this year's tournament hosts. CofC got out to an early lead that they maintained for nearly three full quarters, but JMU corrected course late in the third and the entirety of the fourth to hand the Cougars the 74-60 loss. Tanisha Brown had a stellar game in defeat, posting a 20-12 with three steals to complete her tenth double-double of the season.
Brown's been a standout for the Cougars all season, and enters the CAA Tournament as a Top 10 scorer (12.7 PPG) and rebounder (7.5 RPG) in the conference. Breanna Bolden meanwhile enters the swan song of her collegiate career looking to put an exclamation point on what's been a stellar campaign. The senior holds CofC career records in scoring, rebounding, field goals, and most notably, steals. With several records already in hand, she stands close to two more significant marks, needing only eight free throws to break the CofC Division I Era career free throws made record and 37 points to break the Division I Era single season points record. No matter how things in the tournament go down, she'll finish as one of the very best players in program history.
The Cougars have posted a 11-10 record against the Seahawks in a series that spans back to 1990. The two teams split their games this season, with CofC dominating UNCW by 39 points at home before falling by six on the road in Trask Coliseum. Wednesday's rubber match will determine who gets the right to move on and face No. 2 seed James Madison.
It won't be the first time the Cougars and Seahawks hook up in the CAA Tournament, as the two teams met last year as well in the No. 8/9 matchup. Bolden was undoubtedly the player of the game that time around, posting a 25-9-3 with two steals and a block, while Dajah Logan pulled down eight boards and a career-high 15 points to help lift the College to the 72-61 victory to end UNCW's season.
The Seahawks have just one player averaging double-digit scoring in Madison Raque (11.1 PPG), who also happens to be the only player on the team to start evert game this season. Jasmine Steele is next on the scoring hierarchy, and is Top 5 in the CAA in assists per game at 4.2. Jordan Henry and Rebekah Banks round things out on the inside, as the two combine to average nearly 15 rebounds per contest.
