Rachel's 30 Kills Lift Cougars Over Seahawks, 3-1

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Senior Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) set a new four-set single-match record with 30 kills, Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) dished out 53 assists, and McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) collected 28 digs to lead the No. 25 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team to a 3-1 win over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon.

"Devon [Rachel] was great today," said head coach Jason Kepner. "She got us out of a lot of bad situations and just did a really nice job of moving the ball around. She hit line, hit cross court, hit some roll shots and put a lot of pressure on the other team. Getting 30 kills in four sets is outstanding so I was super proud of Devon today."

With the victory, College of Charleston (15-8, 6-3 CAA) sweeps the season series with UNCW (11-8, 4-5 CAA) to remain third in the CAA standings. The Cougars won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 21-25, and 25-18 while compiling a .338 hitting percentage as a team. Charleston totaled 63 kills, 74 digs, and nine blocks, and limited the Seahawks to 41 kills, 56 digs, seven blocks, and a .096 hitting percentage.

It was a highlight reel day for Rachel, who established two new four-set single-match records (25-point, rally scoring era) with a career-high 30 kills – including 11 in the fourth set – and 66 attack attempts. The senior outside hitter finished the match with seven digs, three blocks, and a .379 (30-5-66) hitting percentage, while also becoming the ninth player in program history to record both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.

Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) put down 15 kills and finished with a .519 (15-1-27) hitting percentage after converting on each of her first 10 attempts. Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) recorded her eighth double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs, as Beckman dished out 53 assists to go along with eight digs and three kills on four swings. Rhodes collected a match-high 28 digs which is tied for the sixth-most in a four-set match during the Cougars' 25-point rally scoring era.

Anna Moss led the way for UNCW with 10 kills and five blocks, as Madison Peters and Kendell Bender each added seven kills. Brynn Montgomery distributed 24 assists while Katie McCullough finished with a team-high 17 digs.

"We'll take a day off on Monday and then it's back to work," continued Kepner. "We play JMU for Pep Supper on Thursday, then we have our Saturday match and Senior Day on on Sunday so things kind of go quickly. We luckily had one match this week, but we have three next week so hopefully we'll get a lot of people out here to support this group in their last [regular season] matches in Charleston."

The Cougars return to the court on Thursday, October 25 when they host CAA-leading James Madison for CofC's annual Pep Supper match. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm in TD Arena.
