BOONE, N.C. – Deja Ford and Tyler Collins scored career highs of 22 and 18, Darien Huff hitting double-digits for the seventh straight game, as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell on the road at Appalachian State 80-66 on Sunday afternoon.
Both teams began slowly on the offensive end, Charleston holding a 4-3 lead at the first media timeout after holding the mountaineers scoreless through five straight possessions.
An Appalachian State 7-0 run gave them a 10-6 lead, Charleston converting from the charity stripe to keep themselves in the game.
Ford got rolling in the second quarter with layups on two straight Cougar possessions. The junior added a three to push her point total to nine, a pair of Collins free throws also cutting the Mountaineers lead to nine.
Appalachian State responded with their own offensive run to push the lead back to 14, Charleston using a 6-0 burst midway through the third to cut into the lead with a combination of Ford, Collins and Latrice Perkins forcing a Mountaineers timeout.
Another 7-0 run by the Charleston offense cut the App St. lead to six, Huff knocking down a three in front of the Charleston bench to push her points total to double-digits for the seventh straight game.
The Cougars used a third straight offensive burst to pull themselves level. Huff knocked down a pair from the charity stripe with Arynn Eady and Perkins adding layups to tie the game at 50-50.
Appalachian State's offense then came alive to close out the game by making 10 of 12 possessions count to push their lead back to double digits.
The Cougars never recovered as they fall to 2-5 on the season and will now take a two-week break before a Dec. 16 matchup at Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
Quotable – Head Coach Candice M. Jackson
"Our first half was rough… After a poor start it's hard to come back from something like that, but we fought hard and did come back from that bad start. I'm so proud of the effort we put forward… the effort we put into the third quarter is who we are and what we can become, the fourth quarter we just ran out of gas. I like what we're doing, we just have to finish out and get a better start to the game. We're a young team, taking these kinds of things early, how we to start a game, finish a game, retain momentum… games can be like pendulums and we have to learn how to use that momentum to finish out these type of games."
