CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston volleyball team (23-11) continues its run in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) on Thursday with a road trip to Clemson, S.C. to take on in-state foe Clemson in the NIVC Quarterfinals. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
Championship Review
The Cougars are one of eight teams vying for the 2018 National Invitational Volleyball Championship title after advancing out of the Georgia Tech regional with a pair of 3-1 victories.
Series History
Thursday's quarterfinal match-up marks the 11th all-time meeting between the Cougars and Tigers. Clemson leads the all-time series (since 1990), 8-1, with the Cougars' lone victory coming by 3-2 decision on Sept. 5, 2003 at Clemson.
Scouting Clemson
Clemson enters Thursday's match with a 19-14 record after defeating Radford, 3-1, in the second round. The Tigers finished with an 8-10 mark in ACC play, including a 3-2 setback to Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Oct. 3.
The Tigers rank fifth in the ACC in both kills (13.31) and assists (12.52) per set, and seventh in hitting percentage (.232). Gabby Easton leads the ACC and ranks 12th in the nation in total assists (1,360), while Alyssa Deloney is currently 53rd nationally with a .357 hitting percentage.
Uncharted Territory
The Cougars advanced to the third round of a postseason tournament (non-conference) for the first time in program history with their 3-1 win over Georgia Tech on Friday. Charleston has made it past the first round of either the NCAA Tournament or the NIVC for only the third time, with both of the previous occurrences coming in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2012.
Region Recognition
Devon Rachel and Kennedy Madison added to their respective lists of honors on Tuesday, each earning a spot on the AVCA's East Coast All-Region team for the first time in their careers. This marks the third time in program history the Cougars have received multiple AVCA All-Region honors in the same season, and first with two players on the All-Region team. The Cougars' two previous pairs both featured one first team and one honorable mention honoree.
Leading the Pack
Lauren Freed turned in back-to-back stellar performances in the first two rounds of the NIVC, averaging 4.38 kills and 3.50 digs per set and compiling a .312 hitting percentage. She posted a pair of double-doubles, including an 18-kill, 16-dig effort in Thursday's 3-1 win over St. John's.
Kepner Stands Alone
Head coach Jason Kepner became the program's all-time wins leader on Friday evening, leading the Cougars to their 287th victory during his 12-year tenure. Kepner passed Nancy Wilson's (1974-83) career mark of 286. In his time at the College, Kepner has led the Cougars to nine conference championships, five NCAA Tournament appearances, and 10 20-win seasons.
Chasing History
Allison Beckman and McKala Rhodes are both closing in on significant - and rare - milestones. Beckman needs 68 assists to reach the coveted 5,000-assist mark, and currently ranks third all-time in the CAA with 4,932 career assists. Rhodes is within striking distance of the 2,000-dig plateau as well, needing only 24 to become the third player in program history to reach that mark.
Climbing the Ladder
Senior Kennedy Madison continued her climb through the program's all-time ranks against Georgia Tech, moving into ninth on the career kills list and now stands at 1,391 smashes in the Maroon and White. The Evansville, Ind. native is in the midst of a career season, averaging 3.53 kills per set and posting a .321 hitting percentage. Both marks are good for fifth in the CAA.
