Five Matches in Five Days: Cougars Gear Up for Grueling Gauntlet
3/26/2018 8:25:00 PM | Women's Tennis
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team enters the most grueling stretch of its entire season this week, as the Cougars are slated to play five matches over the next five days at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Cougars begin their slate on Tuesday at 2 p.m. against the visiting South Alabama Jaguars (13-1). They follow that up with a Wednesday match at 2 p.m. against Georgia Southern (7-5) and a Friday match at 1:30 p.m. against James Madison (15-1). They'll close out the month on Saturday with a double-header on Senior Day against both Elon (10-9) and Notre Dame of Ohio (2-8) at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
The Cougars' senior day double-header will honor the careers of Sarah Jane Jones, Rachel McNeely and Helena Nyikos, all of whom will play their final home match of their collegiate careers.
CofC heads into their five-match gauntlet looking to bounce back from a two-match skid against Buffalo and Florida Atlantic. Junior Turner Yates returned to the lineup against the Owls after a brief absence to claim the team's lone-point of the match, improving her season record to 10-4.
The Cougars will be in for a first-time meeting against Notre Dame of Ohio, and have only encountered South Alabama once before on record, falling 7-0 way back in 2001. The rest of their opponents will be familiar foes for CofC, with James Madison and Elon both inhabiting the same conference, and Georgia Southern being a former SoCon rival of the Cougars from 1999 to 2013. The College is 4-1 all-time against the Dukes, 17-3 against the Phoenix and 23-3 against the Eagles.
At 13-1 on the year, the Jaguars have been on a complete tear this year, their only loss of the season coming 4-3 against Tulane back in mid-February. No. 99 Alexandria Stiteler has been the team's ace in flight one, and in addition to being 10-1 on the season, is an impressive 2-1 against nationally ranked foes, having previously defeated Idaho's Marianna Petrei and Nevada's Claudia Herrero Garcia back in the fall.
Georgia Southern is led by Sean McCaffery, the former coach of the once wildly successful Armstrong State men's and women's tennis programs before the school ceased athletics after being acquired by Georgia Southern last season. The Eagles are looking to bounce back from two straight losses to Coastal Carolina and the aforementioned Jaguars suffered over the weekend. Arianne de Winter is the team's ace at the No. 1 slot, holding a 7-5 record to match her team's current clip.
The Dukes are experiencing one of their greatest seasons in school history at 15-1, their sole loss of the year coming at the hands of North Florida. JMU has been most dangerous this season at the No. 2 singles position, where Elizabeth Norman boasts a 15-0 record.
Elon, who will be hosting the CAA Tournament in less than a month, is slightly down in 2018 from last year's 18-8 season, and though they currently ride a two-match winning streak, both victories came against non-Division I opponents in Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem State. Like the Dukes, Elon's most reliable this year has done her work in flight two, as Erica Braschi enjoys an 11-5 record in singles this year.
To say the Notre Dame of Ohio women's tennis team will be playing the Cougars on fresh legs is an understatement, as the Falcons have played just one match to date since mid-October (a 9-0 defeat at the hands of Mercyhurst). In their most recent win, a 5-4 triumph over Shepherd, it was the trifecta of Laura Herrera, Emily Hofsess and Ameer Robertson who got the job done, as all three won both their singles and doubles encounters.
