TOWSON, Md. --- The College of Charleston baseball team scored twice in the ninth, and put two runners in scoring position with one out, but were unable to close the gap further as the Cougars fell to Towson, 5-3, on Sunday in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The setback snaps a five-game winning streak for College of Charleston (32-16, 14-7 CAA), and drops the Cougars 1.5 games behind Northeastern in the CAA standings. Towson (13-35, 6-12 CAA) pushed five runs on nine hits – including three tallies in the fifth – while holding Charleston to three runs on seven base knocks.
Ari Sechopoulos (Windsor, Ontario, Canada) paced the Cougars with two doubles and one RBI, as Logan McRae (Florence, S.C.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Joey Mundy (Huntington, W.Va.), Luke Morgan (New Lenox, Ill.), and Tommy Richter (Wayne, Pa.) each scored a run, while Dupree Hart (Rock Hill, S.C.) collected his 17th RBI of the season.
Jakob Frishmuth (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) surrendered four runs on six hits in four and one-third innings to take the loss. Justin Baker (Huntersville, N.C.) allowed one run and struck out four in three and two-thirds out of the bullpen.
Mark Grunberg and Colin Gimblet each drove in two runs to lead the way for Towson, as Richie Palacios went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Trey Martinez also picked up an RBI. Alex Cuas held the Cougars to on unearned run on four hits and struck out seven in seven innings to earn the win. Kody Reeser picked up his first save of the season despite allowing two runs on three hits in two frames.
The Cougars return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host The Citadel in their final home game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm at Patriots Point.
