Kim's Header Leads The College Past High Point

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Rachel Kim's second minute header proved to be the game winner as the College of Charleston women's soccer team closed out the preseason with a 1-0 win over High Point University on Saturday evening.
The College dominated the opening stages with Ali Freitas and Laura Ortega working a short corner into a crossing opportunity for Freitas down the left wing. Her flighted ball was met by Kim on the six-yard box whose bullet header gave Charleston an early 1-0 lead.
Another short corner between Freitas and Ortega in the 19th minute worked an opportunity for Alyssa Beck at the top right edge of the box but her curling effort clipped the top of the bar and out of play.
Ortega proved to be the catalyst for the offense as she helped create another opportunity early in the second half. A quickly taken free kick to Leah Deutsch ended with a cross flashing across the box and in the back of the net via a High Point defender before being ruled out for offside.
Beck hit the bar for the second time in the 87th minute with a 35-yard effort that again clipped the top of the bar and bounced out of play.
High Point responded by hitting the post from the right byline in the dying seconds of the second period with Kacey Smekrud clearing the danger for The College.
Mackenzie Crittenberger came to the rescue in the extra period of play after the Panthers had burst through on goal by easing the striker off the ball and clearing the danger. The Panthers carved one final opportunity with a shot across the face of goal, but the clock expired to give the Cougars the 1-0 win.
