CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.) put down a match-high 14 kills, and Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) and Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) each recorded a double-double to lead the No. 15 (VolleyballMag.com Mid-Major Poll) College of Charleston volleyball team to a sweep of Elon in both teams' Colonial Athletic Association opener on Friday evening.
"I thought the girls played really well," said head coach Jason Kepner. "We were very on our game to start the match. Besides the first two or three points, we are very clean and very efficient, and that's something we've been focusing on. As the match went on, we got a little sloppier and Elon did a much better job of putting some pressure on us. Overall we're 1-0 with a 3-0 win to start conference play - I'll take that all the time."
College of Charleston (10-5, 1-0 CAA) won the match by scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-19 to record its eighth win in the last nine matches. The Cougars totaled 46 kills, 63 digs, five blocks, and a .205 hitting percentage, while holding Elon (8-4, 0-1 CAA) to 24 kills, 54 digs, nine blocks, and a .063 attacking clip.
Rachel continued her strong play over the past several matches, leading all hitters with 14 kills to go along with eight digs and a .308 hitting percentage. Freed posted her team-best sixth double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, while Beckman added her second double-double of the season with 33 assists and 11 digs. The senior setter also contributed three kills, two blocks, and a service ace.
Logan Manusky (San Diego, Calif.) paced the defense with 13 digs, while McKala Rhodes (Charleston, S.C.) chipped in 10 digs of her own. Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) finished with 8 kills, five digs, and three blocks, as Peyton Eisnaugle (Dallas, Texas) tallied six kills and three blocks.
Kam Terry led the way for Elon with nine kills and a match-high 15 digs. Kodi Garcia recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 10 digs, while Maddie Jaudon and Natalie Cummins chipped in 11 digs and six blocks, respectively.
The Cougars return to the court on Sunday when they host William and Mary in CAA action at 1:00 pm in TD Arena.
