CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston baseball team will face its first true test of the 2019 season this weekend when the Cougars welcome No. 27 UConn to Patriots Point for a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. with junior Griffin McLarty (Buckner, Ky.) taking the ball opposite UConn senior Jeff Kersten.
Weekend Preview
The Cougars carry an unblemished 4-0 record into their weekend series with UConn, who took two-of-three from No. 4 Louisville on the season's opening weekend with wins on Friday and Sunday.
Scouting UConn
UConn comes into the weekend with a 2-1 record and ranked No. 27 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Poll following a series win at Louisville. The Huskies pushed across 13 runs on 23 hits - including three home runs - to win the series.
Christian Fedko leads the Huskies with one home run, four RBIs and a .429 batting average, while Anthony Prato and Chris Winkel have each driven in two runs. Friday starter Jeff Kersten surrendered an unearned run on five hits over six innings in a no-decision last Friday.
Series History
The Cougars are 1-2 all-time against UConn in a trio of mid-week match-ups. Charleston's lone win came by a score of 10-6 on Feb. 25, 2012 at Patriots Point.
Last Time Out
The Cougars rallied from a 3-0 deficit to edge Charleston Southern, 7-5, in the first game of a four-game season series. Chaz Davey and Tanner McCallister each drove in two, and Nathan Ocker struck out four over 2.2 innings to earn the win.
Always in the Fight
It may be only four games into the season, but the Cougars are already proving to be a difficult opponent to put away with a pair of come-from-behind victories on the early season resume.
Base-running Terrors
The Cougars gave the Bucs fits on the base paths through Wednesday night's game, finishing the evening with seven stolen bases to vault into eighth in the early-season national stats rankings. Dupree Hart currently ranks first in the CAA and is tied for fifth in the nation with five stolen bases.
Making His Mark
Senior transfer Chaz Davey wasted little time in getting off the mark at The College, driving in a team-high six runs with two doubles and a home run in the Cougars' season-opening sweep of UNC Asheville. The North Augusta, S.C. native also scored five runs.
Rookie Raking
Tanner McCallister came up big in his first collegiate start on Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. The Roebuck, S.C. native delivered one of the biggest clutch hits of the night in the sixth inning, bouncing the 0-2 pitch through the left side for a go-ahead two-run single as part of the Cougars' game-altering five-run frame.
