RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston's Maddy Brill-Edwards (Haverford, Pa.) was one of 19 student-athletes honored with the 2018-19 Colonial Athletic Association Leadership and Sport Excellence Award by the conference office on Tuesday.
A 2017 All-CAA Second Team and 2018 Preseason All-CAA selection for the women's soccer team, Brill-Edwards was an inspiration to her teammates and her community throughout her four-year career at The College.
Though Brill-Edwards sustained a serious injury, she worked hard to come back for her senior season in 2018. She played in 14 games of the season scoring two goals and recording two assists for the Cougars, who went 11-8-1 overall and reached the CAA Semifinals.
Off the field, Brill-Edwards spoke about women in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields to high school students at Chucktown Squash Scholars, a local non-profit organization that is an after-school youth development program. She also earned the athletics department's Academic MVP Award, given to the senior student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average.
The former team captain and member of the CofC Honors College graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in biology, magna cum laude. Brill-Edwards was one of five finalists for the J. Stewart Walker Cup Award, which is the highest award given by the athletics department to a deserving student-athlete and the recipient of the Charlie Post Courage Award presented annually by the CofC sports medicine staff to a student-athlete, who has demonstrated courage and perseverance despite facing various challenges and adversity.
One student-athlete was chosen from each of the 19 sports (other than men's and women's basketball and football) sponsored by the CAA for embodying the highest standards of leadership, integrity, teamwork and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements. This is the second year of the award.
