CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston begins its 2021 softball campaign when the Cougars face Eastern Kentucky on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Cleveland State on Sunday at noon in a pair of doubleheaders at Patriots Point.
Admission will be free on Saturday, and tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youths on Sunday. Please see the links above for complete information regarding game day and clear bag policies that will be in place. Face coverings (over the nose and mouth) will be required as a condition of all guest entry.
The Cougars finished 10-10 in a 2020 season that was canceled in mid-March as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. That included a 1-0 win over Appalachian State on February 22 that gave head coach Linda Kalafatis her 1,000th career victory.
Kalafatis is beginning her eighth season at CofC and needs one win to reach 200 with the Cougars.
"After almost a year we are really excited to take the field this season," said Kalafatis. "While the year has been unconventional, we are grateful for the opportunity to play softball. A lot of people have worked hard to make this possible for our student-athletes, and we're thankful that we get to hit the dirt soon."
Eastern Kentucky opened its season last Sunday with two losses to nationally-ranked Tennessee, dropping the second contest by a narrow 3-2 margin. The Colonels took a 2-0 lead in the first on a home run by Carly Robinson before the Volunteers rallied in the fifth. Bethany Todd struck out five in six innings.
Cleveland State dropped three of four to Bowling Green last weekend. Taylor Betz tossed a three-hitter in a 3-1 win in the second game of the series and has nine strikeouts in 15 innings. Sydney Bajusz and Gabby Shackelford both have a homer and three RBI.
The Cougars have split two games against Eastern Kentucky, including a 5-1 win at Patriots Point in 2017. The lone meeting against Cleveland State resulted in an 8-0 CofC victory in a 2005 neutral site contest.
