CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston continues its 12-game homestand Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Coastal Carolina at Patriots Point. Admission to the twinbill is free.
The longtime rivals have met 71 times with the Chanticleers holding a 46-25 lead. Coastal took a 1-0 win at Patriots Point on April 23, 2019, and last year's game was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
A pair of freshmen have been red hot at the plate for the Cougars. Aniz Roman is on a five-game hitting streak during which she is 11-for-17 with six runs scored, raising her average from .269 to .348. She had four hits, including a double and triple, in the first game of the series against Elon.
Shealyn Starks has hit safely in eight of the past 10 games with a trio of three-hit outings over that span. She drove in four runs in a win over South Carolina State last Wednesday and added three hits in the second game of the Elon series. Starks has upped her average from .231 to .310.
Payton Wade continues to lead the Cougars with five home runs and is tied with Roman for the top spot with five doubles. Wade also paces the team with 14 RBI, one more than Starks.
Coastal is led at the plate by Makiya Thomas, who is batting .360 with 10 doubles and 12 RBI, and Mackenzie Beyer, who has seven home runs and 16 RBI, one behind team-leader Courtney Dean. Kaitlin Beasley-Polko has five wins in the circle while striking out 70 batters in 80 1/3 innings.
