
Cougars Snap Drexel's Nation-Best 14 Game Win Streak in Road Thriller, 74-73

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The College of Charleston women's basketball team (12-9, 4-6) took down the CAA-leading Drexel Dragons (17-3, 9-1) 74-73 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Cougars led by as many as 24 in the game, but the Dragons fought back to tie it up with just over a minute to play. The Cougars held serve, however, getting two clutch buckets from Jenna Annecchiarico, along with a 4-for-4 finish at the foul line to come away with the win.
Entering Sunday's action, the Drexel Dragons were tied with Florida Gulf Coast for the nation's longest active win streak, having won 14 consecutive games since November 27th.
Drexel was also 9-0 in CAA play prior to Sunday's game. The Dragons were the last remaining CAA team to be undefeated in league action.
Sunday's win was also the first time the Cougars have won at Drexel. Charleston was previously 0-7 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
First Half
- The Cougars started the game just 3-of-10 from the field, trailing 10-7 at the first quarter media timeout. Charleston quickly scored six points out of the timeout to grab an 13-10 lead with just under three minutes to play in the first
- Drexel tied the game at 13 before another 6-0 run by the Cougars - fueled by a triple from Jenna Annecchiarico and an and-one from Zoe McCrary - gave CofC a 19-13 lead after one period of play
- The Cougars shot 44 percent from the field in the opening quarter and held the Dragons to just 29 percent shooting
- From the last couple minutes of the first quarter through the first three minutes of the second quarter, the Cougars outscored the Dragons 13-0, holding Drexel scoreless for nearly six minutes of game time. With 5:35 left until halftime, Charleston led 31-15
- After McGarity's third triple, CofC led 34-15. The Cougars started the game 5-of-6 from three
- The Cougars were held scoreless for over three minutes, but the Charleston defense was able to keep the Dragons from cutting its lead to less than 14
- At the half, CofC led 37-20 behind 13 points and 10 rebounds from Arynn Eady. Anika McGarity scored nine points and dished out three assists in the opening 20 minutes
- Charleston shot 48 percent in the first half, including 5-of-9 from three. The Cougars held Drexel to 22 percent (7-of-32) from the floor in first half and out rebounded the Dragons 24-17
Second Half
- The Cougars continued to build its lead, outscoring the Dragons 11-9 before the third quarter media timeout. CofC led 48-29 with just under five minutes to go in the third quarter
- With around four minutes to go, the McGarity drained her fifth three-pointer of the contest to give CofC a 21-point advantage, leading 51-29
- After three, the Cougars had increased their halftime lead a point, holding a 59-41 advantage with 10 minutes to play.
- Arynn Eady and Anika McGarity combined for 16 of the Cougars 22 third quarter points
- The Dragons opened the fourth on a 12-4 run to cut the CofC lead to 63-53
- Drexel continued to cut into its deficit, using a 17-6 run to bring the CofC lead down to 65-58 with 4:37 left in the game
- With just under three minutes to go, Drexel got a steal and an and-one to cut Charleston's lead to 66-63
- Drexel went 2-for-2 at the foul line to tie the game at 66-66 with 1:23 to play
- Jenna Annecchiarico came through in the clutch, cashing in on a floater to put the Cougars back up two. After a held ball, the Cougars gained possession leading 68-66 with 43.8 seconds left in the contest. Annecchiarico followed that up with another mid-range jumper to extend CofC's lead to four with 20 seconds to go
- After getting a quick two points, Drexel sent Arynn Eady to the line to shoot two with the Cougars leading 70-68. Eady made both to give the Cougars a four point lead.
- The Dragons would sink a three at the buzzer, but it would not matter. The Cougars escaped with its first ever win in the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 74-73
Team Stats
- Charleston assisted on 18 of its 27 made field goals in the game. That mark tied the most assists in a CAA game for the Cougars this season (18 assists at William & Mary)
- The Cougars shot 50 percent (27-of-54) from the field for the second time in CAA play, a feat they also accomplished at William & Mary
- Charleston went 46.7 percent (7-for-15) from three in the game
- The Cougars won the rebounding battle, 39-33. Charleston is 7-0 when it outrebounds its opponent this season
Key Cougars
- Arynn Eady went off for a career-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting (84.8 percent). That field goal percentage marks the fourth best shooting performance in a game for a Charleston player in its D1 era. Eady also added 12 rebounds, two assists and two blocks
- Anika McGarity was on fire beyond-the-arc, scoring 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep. McGarity also racked up five assists
- Jenna Annecchiarico finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists
