CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston volleyball head coach Jason Kepner announced the addition of Justin Bass as an assistant coach Thursday afternoon.
Bass comes to Charleston from Newberry where he led a defense that saw two South Atlantic Conference Defensive Players of the Week as well as several individual defensive school records broken. He spent two seasons at Newberry as an assistant helping guide the Wolves to 26 wins.
"I am excited to have Justin join our staff. I have had the pleasure of working with him at our camps the last few years," Kepner said. "He is an extremely hard-worker and a very good technical coach. All his teams have improved during his time, and I look froward to seeing what he can bring to our team."
Prior to Newberry, Bass spent three seasons at North Greenville where the Crusaders won 18 matches each of his first two seasons then went 12-0 and won the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship in Spring 2021. Bass' spring 2021 defense was one of the best in the country holding opponents to a hitting percentage of .108 – the 8th-best mark in Division II.
"I am thrilled to be a part of the Cougar family! I am thankful for Jason, Kennedy, and the athletic administration for allowing me to be a part of something special," Bass said. "I'm looking forward to working with such a great group of athletes and to also be working with one of one of the best staffs in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Great things are happening in Charleston and I'm eager with expectation to be part of its continued success with the volleyball program as well as the institution. Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina!"
Bass also spent one season as the assistant coach at powerhouse Dorman High School in Spartanburg helping lead the program to their 13th state title.
He began his collegiate coaching at USC Upstate in 2016 and spent two seasons with the Spartans coaching a defense that finished 6th in Division I in team digs. The Spartans also made their first ever run to the ASUN Volleyball Tournament semifinals under his watch.
Bass graduated from USC Upstate with degrees in Psychology and Communications.
