CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston baseball took on Penn Friday night in game one of a four game set. Down 5-1 in the fifth, the Cougars bats woke up with a seven-run inning to jump out in front 8-5. Charleston added on later as they took game one 11-5.

Jake Brink got the start for the Cougars on the mound. It would be Brink's toughest start of the young season as Penn kept finding holes and racked up three infield hits in the first couple frames. Brink settled down in the third for a pair of scoreless innings but Penn picked up two more runs in the fifth to chase Brink from the game.

In the fifth inning, Charleston had the bases loaded and Cole Mathis at the plate. Mathis delivered a shot into the right-center gap that cleared the bases and cut the lead to one. A few pitches later, Mathis scored on a wild pitch. More wild pitches and a pass ball brought in two more runs as Charleston went up 7-5. Luke Wood then put the exclamation point on the inning with an RBI double to score Avery Neaves.

Charleston added on in the 7th to put the game out of reach as Charleston took game one of the series 11-5.

Key Cougars

Dylan Johnson and Will Baumhofer each had a pair of hits. Cole Mathis, Dariyan Pendergrass, Kevin Madden, Avery Neaves and Luke Wood each had a hit.
Cole Mathis finished with three RBIs. Luke Wood and Dylan Johnson each had a pair of RBIs.
Emmett Bice picked up the win to move to 3-2 on the season. Bice three 2.0 innings out of the pen, surrendering two hits and striking out four.
