CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston baseball team will host Georgia Southern tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. for the finale of a three game season series. The Cougars and Eagles have played twice this season in Statesboro with each team winning one. Charleston won game one two weeks ago 8-6 before the Eagles run-ruled the Cougars 13-3 last week.
Last Time Out
The Cougars had a big weekend in New York, sweeping a three game set with Stony Brook to move to 17-9 on the season and 4-2 in CAA play. Charleston got the bats going early and often in the first two games of the series. On Friday, Cole Singsank set the tone with a first inning grand slam to put the Cougars up 4-0. A two-run shot by Luke Wood made it a 6-1 game in the third as Charleston continued to add on during the later innings, winning 11-5. Stony Brook struck first on Saturday but the Cougars responded quick with a two-run shot by Dylan Johnson in the second. The Cougars added three more in the third and continued to add runs the rest of the way. After a Stony Brook rally made it a 13-8 game, Will Baumhofer capped off a four-run ninth with a two-run homer to put the game to bed 17-8.
Connor Campbell's effort on the mound led to a 6-2 win on Sunday to complete the sweep. Campbell shutout the Seawolves through seven, finishing with a final line of eight-plus innings, six hits, two earned runs, a walk and two strikeouts. Homers from Cole Singsank, Avery Neaves and Cole Mathis provided the Cougars lead. Stony Brook got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Davis Aiken shut the door to pick up save number five of the season.
Scouting the Eagles
Georgia Southern picked up another series win in the Sun Belt over the weekend, taking two on the road at Arkansas State to move to 14-13 (5-4) on the year. After a 6-2 win on Thursday, the Eagles run-ruled the Red Wolves 11-0 on Friday. The Eagles had a shot at sweeping the series on Saturday but a bases clearing double in the eighth by Arkansas State put the Red Wolves up five in a 6-3 final.
The Eagles offense has picked up during Sun Belt play as they have averaged 7.5 runs per game over the last seven games (5-2). JD Kaiser has been swinging a hot bat and now leads the team with four homers, he homered in both games against Charleston. Josh Tate upped his team leading average to .349 over the weekend. Tate finished with two hits in both games against the Cougars and now has a hit in seven of his last eight games. Jarrett Brown has also raised his average above .300 with a hot streak over the last few weeks. Brown homered in the last game game against Charleston and is now hitting .309 on the year.
