The No. 4 seed Cougars improve to 35-20 overall and pick up their 25th home victory, advancing in the winner's bracket. The Tribe slipped to 21-34 overall.
CRITICAL POINTS AGAINST WILLIAM & MARY:
- Junior Jake Brink kept the William & Mary bats silent, allowing just five hits and a walk across the seven scoreless innings.
- Scoreless in the first, Charleston plated runs in the remaining frames.
- Leading 1-0 in the third, senior Dylan Johnson launched a no-doubt two-run shot over the left field wall for the 3-0 advantage.
- The Cougars made it a 5-0 ballgame in the fourth courtesy of an RBI triple from freshman Alex LaCoste and sacrifice bunt from senior Ben Venables to bring home LaCoste.
- Charleston broke the game open in the fifth with five runs.
- Redshirt junior Ethan Plyler led off the frame with a solo shot to center before freshman Landon Penfield went back-to-back with a solo homer of his own.
- CofC tacked on three more runs in the frame, making it 10-0, and putting the run rule in effect.
- Avery Neaves' two run blast in the sixth gave Charleston their most runs scored in a CAA Tournament game.
- Brink sat down 11 of the final 13 batters to secure the shutout win.
OF NOTE:
- Charleston improves to 32-12 all-time against William & Mary, 18-4 at home and 7-2 in the CAA Tournament.
- The Cougars have at least 35 wins in the last four seasons.
- CofC's 12 runs are the most in a CAA Tournament game and most in a postseason contest since 2010 against App State.
- The Cougars' four home runs are tied for the most hit in a CAA Tournament contest, which was originally done on May 23, 2018, against Hofstra.
- Brink is the first Cougar pitcher to throw a complete game shutout in the CAA Tournament.
- Plyer and Penfield are the first Charleston hitters to collect back-to-back homers since May 27, 2022, when Luke Wood and Landon Choboy went back-to-back in the first inning against Elon.
- Senior Tyler Sorrentino extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an RBI single in the second inning.
- Brink's three complete games are the most by a CAA pitcher this season.
- Brink also tied his career-mark in innings pitched with 92.2 frames.
