Nick Chigges and Russ Tomlinson combined to strikeout 14 and Chris Campbell became the Southern Conference's all-time leader in career doubles helping 24th-ranked College of Charleston to a 5-2 win over Elon in the opener of its three-game series before 293 at Latham Park on Friday.
With the win, Charleston improves to 35-11 overall and 16-3 in league play. The Phoenix fell to 26-22 and 13-9. Game two of the series is at 7:00 on Saturday.
Chigges, who improved to 9-0 on the season and 29-4 for his career, struck out 11 over the first eight innings. Chigges allowed two runs on just seven hits. Tomlinson struck out the side in the ninth for his third save of the season. Steven Hensley (7-4) suffered the loss allowing five runs over eight innings.
Campbell had two doubles, including the 76th of his career, which surpassed Philip Hartig of The Citadel into first place on the league's doubles list. Campbell bounced a double down the left field line in the first and set the mark with a double to left in the sixth inning.
Alex Garabedian's one-out, solo homer to left in the fifth, was his ninth of the season, and tied the game at 1-1. Oliver Marmol delivered a two-out, two-run single to center later in the inning that gave Charleston lead for good at 3-1.
Graham Maiden's two-out, two-run double to left in the eighth scored Michael Harrington and Campbell and stretched Charleston's lead to 5-1. Elon's Ryan Addison had a solo homer in the third and Mike Melillo added a run-scoring single in the eighth for the final margin.
