
College of Charleston Volleyball Set to Close out John Kresse Arena Against Cross Town Rival The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The College of Charleston volleyball program closes out an era on Wednesday, November 5 when they host cross town rival The Citadel in the final match at historic John Kresse Arena. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.

The College of Charleston enters the final match at John Kresse Arena having clinched their eighth straight Southern Conference Championship, this one a South Division Title.
The Cougars locked up the division with a pair of victories this past weekend over Wofford and Furman and are currently 12-1 in the Southern Conference. The victory assures Charleston of a first round matchup with the four-seed from the North Division in the 2008 Southern Conference Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
CofC scored the first 11 points against Wofford on their way to a 25-13 Game 1 victory before coasting to a 3-0 match win. Freshman middle blocker Elyse Chubb (Peachtree City, Ga.) notched eight kills and a career-high nine blocks while sophomore right side hitter Ginny Phillips (Raleigh, N.C.) added seven kills and tied her career-high with six blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Whitney Russell (Decatur, Ga.) led the Cougars with 10 kills while sophomore setter Cole Dawley (Charleston, S.C.) dished out a match-high 24 assists and hit .750.
Junior outside hitter Emily Sawin (New Lenox, Ill.) led the way in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Furman as she hit .317 and delivered a career-high 24 kills while Dawley finished with 44 assists, 15 digs and five blocks. Freshma libero Emily Shelton (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the defense with 28 digs and Chubb notched 13 kills and five blocks.
Dawley continues to lead the Cougars with an average of 10.28 assists and is second on the team with 2.40 digs per set. Her .321 hitting percentage ranks second on the team and she has posted averages of 0.71 blocks and 1.02 kills from the setter position. Sawin leads the team with 3.29 kills per game and adds 2.08 digs while Whitney Russell is second at 3.01 kills. Elyse Chubb is hitting a team-best .352 and is averaging 2.44 kills and a team-best 1.21 blocks.
Defensively, Shelton leads the team with an average of 4.47 digs per set while junior middle blocker Jennifer Darty (Orlando, Fla.) is averaging 1.12 blocks. Ginny Phillips is averaging 2.33 kills, 0.42 service aces and 0.83 blocks per set. Nationally, Phillips ranks 50th in service aces, Chubb is 36th in blocks and 54th with a .352 hitting percentage, Dawley is 72nd in assists and Shelton is 64th in digs. As a team, Charleston is 26th in blocks (2.57), 42nd in win percentage (.760), 52nd in hitting percentage (.242), 57th in kills (13.48) and 70th in assists (12.24).

The Bulldogs visit John Kresse Arena for the final time following weekend losses to Wofford and Furman. The Citadel dropped 3-0 decisions to both schools following a straight sets victory over Winston-Salem State on October 28. They enter the weekend with an 8-19 overall record and 1-12 mark in the Southern Conference.
Jessica Maas leads the offensive attack for the The Citadel with 2.63 kills per set and adds 1.93 digs while Rachel Sanders is averaging 2.57 kills and 3.24 digs. Emily Hill leads the team in assists with a 6.00 average with Alyssa Holum notching 3.20 per outing. Defensively, Tatum Jestila is averaging a team-high 3.54 digs to go along with 2.29 kills. Amanda Beal leads the squad with an average .054 blocks.
Series History vs. The Citadel
The College of Charleston has a perfect record against The Citadel having not only won all 20 previous meetings, but also winning every match by a 3-0 score. Those 20 victories include two earlier this season on September 5 in the Stetson Invitational and on October 8 at The Citadel.
