GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Jermaine Johnson (Los Angeles, Calf.) and Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.) scored 12 points each and the Cougars used a big second half surge en route to a 77-62 Southern Conference win at UNC Greensboro at Fleming Gym on Saturday.
Charleston, which plays host to Coastal Carolina in a 7 p.m. start at Carolina First Arena on Dec. 17, won its sixth in a row and improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Spartans fell to 1-5 and 0-2.
In the first half, both teams came out and traded buckets, as the game was knotted up at 20-20 with 10 minutes left in the period. The steady play by both teams continued over the next eight minutes, as the game still remained tied at 32-32 with a little over three minutes left in the half.
From there, the Spartans controlled, as they ended the period on an 8-2 run to take a 40-35 lead going into the locker room. Mikko Koivisto led all scorers at the break with 11 points, while the Cougars were hampered by inconsistent shooting from three-point and free throw lines (2-13 from three-point, 0-7 from free throw line).
In the second half, the Cougars came out and controlled things from the start, as they took their first lead of the half at the 14:20 mark at 47-45 off an Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) layin. The Cougars would increase the lead to 55-48 at the 11:45 mark after a Johnson layup.
After UNC Greensboro cut the Cougars lead down to 55-51 at the 11:31 mark, Charleston would go on an infanic 11-0 run over a three-minute span to open the game up at 66-51. The deficit was too much for UNC Greensboro to come back from, as Cougars eventually opened up a 77-55 lead with a little over two minutes left to cap off the second half surge.
Other top scorers for the Cougars included Goudelock, who tallied 11 points and Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) who added 10 points. Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.) was the team's leading rebounder pulling down eight, while Monroe recorded five steals and three assists on the day.
The Cougars shot 63.3 percent from the field in the second half and outscored the Spartans 24-10 in the paint in the second half to earn the win. Charleston also won the game despite the fact they shot 0-for-11 from the free throw line in the contest.
Koivisto led UNC Greensboro on the day, as he was the game's high scorer with 17 points.
