
Cougars Down UNC Greensboro, 89-73

Tony White, Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored 17 points and the College of Charleston hit a school-record 12 3-pointers in the first half en route to an 89-73 Southern Conference win over UNC Greensboro before 3,227 at Carolina First Arena on Thursday.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 16-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. The Spartans fell to 3-16 and 2-8. The Cougars play host to Elon at 4 p.m. on Saturday. UNCG plays at The Citadel at 7:05 p.m on Saturday.
Charleston senior Jermaine Johnson (Los Angeles, Calif.) became just the fourth player in school history to score at least 1,100 points and grab at least 850 rebounds. Johnson, who has 1,160 career points and 852 rebounds, finished with 16 points and seven rebounds on the night.
The Cougars, whose previous mark was nine 3-pointers in a half at Chattanooga on Feb. 22, 2002, connected on 12-of-16 3-point attempts in the first half and grabbed a 55-37 lead at intermission. Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) had 13 points, while White added 12.
In the second half, UNC Greensboro, who got a game-high 26 points from Ben Stywalll, closed to within 72-61 with 12:16 remaining. The Cougars answered with a 15-6 run to take an 87-67 lead with 1:57 left.
Damian Eargle added 22 points for the Spartans while Stywall had a team-high nine boards. Eargle and Stywall were the only Spartans to score more than six points.
Charleston got 15 points and six assists from Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) and nine rebounds from Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.). Marcus Hammond (Memphis, Tenn.) added six assists.
For the game, Charleston shot 55.6 percent from the floor (35-63), 67.7 percent in the first half when it connected on 21-of-31 attempts. UNCG shot 41.8 percent for the game hitting 28-of-67 tries.
