
Cougars Travel to Furman for SoCon Match-up

The College of Charleston travels to Greenville, S.C., Saturday, Dec. 19 to take on Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action. The game against the Paladins is slated for 3:00 p.m. at Timmons Arena.
Charleston is 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference after having defeated the Elon Phoenix 63-50, in its last meeting. The Cougars are 2-0 to open Southern Conference play for the first time since the 2006-07 season, but have never gone 3-0. Furman holds the 22-11 record over Charleston but it is the Cougars that have won the last three out of four, including a 64-53 decision in the last meeting, Feb. 3, 2009, in Greenville.
Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) leads the Cougars in scoring with 12.2 points per game, while Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) follows with 11.4. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) paces the team in rebounds with 7.9 a game. Gerty is also seventh in the Southern Conference in scoring, while Hughes is ninth. In rebounding, Jones is third in the league. Gerty leads the league in assists, while Hughes is sixth. As a team, Charleston is ranked third in scoring offense and third in scoring defense, as well as second in assists. The team is also tied for third in rebounding offense.
Furman is 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the league. Most recently the Paladins defeated Stetson 76-60 in non-conference action Dec. 12. Four Paladins scored in double-figures, including Kaitlin Murphy and Raegan Thompson who each posted 15 points to lead the team. Lee Stephens leads the team overall this season with 12.8 points per game, while Susan Troutman paces Furman with 5.4 rebounds per game.
Stephens is ninth in the league in scoring, while teammate Murphy is 26th. In rebounding for the Paladins, Troutman is 17th.
Charleston returns home Monday, Dec. 21 to take on the Catamounts of Western Carolina in a 7:00 p.m. tip. It is a rematch from last year's Southern Conference Tournament Final. The Catamounts defeated the Cougars, 101-87, in triple overtime. It is also the "Habitat for Humanity Game." Any fan that brings in a children's book will receive free admission to the game. All books will be donated to Habitat for Humanity families.
