Cougars Preparing for Catamounts
12/21/2009 1:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The College of Charleston women's basketball team will host Western Carolina Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in what is billed as the "Habitat for Humanity Game." Any fan that brings in a children's book will receive free admission to the game. All books will be donated to Habitat for Humanity families.
Several Habitat for Humanity families will be special guests at the game and the organization will have a table set up on the main concourse to present information for those interested in learning more or volunteering at various sites around Charleston.
The Catamounts own the 23-11 overall record over the Cougars, including a 101-87 loss in the last meeting. The Cougars and Catamounts met in last year's Southern Conference Tournament Championship. WCU outlasted CofC in a record three overtimes, to receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. It was Charleston's first trip to the SoCon finals.
Charleston is 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference after having defeated the Furman Paladins 77-74, in its last meeting. The Cougars are 3-0 to open Southern Conference for the first time in league history. Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) leads the Cougars in scoring with 12.6 points per game, while Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) follows with 11.3. Deidra Jones (Irmo, S.C.) paces the team in rebounds with 7.9 a game.
Western Carolina is 2-8 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts have been idle since a 61-41 loss at Western Kentucky Dec. 12. The game between Western Carolina and Georgia Southern, originally scheduled for Dec. 19, was postponed due to a snowstorm that blanketed Cullowhee, not allowing the Catamounts to make the trek down to Statesboro, Ga. Western Carolina is led this season by Emily Clarke with 11.3 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Head Coach Nancy Wilson coached Western Carolina's first-year head coach Karen Middleton from 1988-91. Middleton was a four-year starter, team captain, team MVP and two-time All-Metro Conference team member for the South Carolina Gamecocks during Wilson's tenure. In 1989-90, Wilson led Middleton and the rest of the Gamecocks to a NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16" appearance. Middleton also served on Wilson's staff as a volunteer assistant coach from 1991-92 and an assistant coach from 1992-94
