Charleston, which remained unbeaten in seven home games, improved to 12-6 overall and 7-0 in league play, which is the best start for the Cougars since the 1998-99 season. Furman fell to 9-9 and 3-4. Furman opened the second half on a 22-7 run which turned an eight-point Cougar lead into a one-point deficit with 13:52 remaining. Goudelock hit one of his 11 jumpers on the night to give the Cougars the lead back, 56-55 at 13:38, and Cassan Breeden (Clio, S.C.) followed with a steal and a three-pointer to give Charleston a four-point lead with 13:23 to go.
After falling down by nine late in the game, the Paladins cut the margin back to four with 3:39 left before the Cougars responded with a 15-7 run, capped off by six straight free throws, to give the Cougars the double-digit win.
Charleston built an eight-point lead late in the first half but Paladin Colin Reddick rattled off five unanswered to cut the margin to three with just under two minutes before intermission. After Matt Sundberg (Kennesaw, Ga.) gave the Cougars a five point lead again with two free throws, Furman turned the ball over with two seconds remaining, and Goudelcok picked up the steal and connected on a three-pointer as time expired to give Charleston the eight-point, 45-37 lead at the break.
Bryson Barnes led the Paladins with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Amu Saaka followed with 15. Furman shot 37.7 percent from the field and went eight-for-17 from beyond the three-point arc. The Paladins out-rebounded the Cougars 47-27 but held the 10-6 edge in turnovers.
Following Goudelock, White, Jr., and Hall, who tied his career-high with 12, in scoring were Donavan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) and Andrew Lawrence (London, England) with 11 apiece. White, Jr., paced the Cougars in rebounds with five and Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) tied his career-high with a team-leading five blocks.
The Cougars shot a season-high 56.4 percent from the field, including 59.3 in the second half and went 21-for-26 from the free-throw line. Charleston went nine-for-17 from beyond the three-point arc with Lawrence going a perfect three-for-three.
The 92 points scored was the most this season and the most since a 93-91 win over Troy at the College Basketball Invitational March 18, 2009.
