The College of Charleston women's basketball team looks to rebound from its first Southern Conference loss of the season when the Cougars travel to Birmingham, Ala., Monday, Jan. 4, to take on the Samford Bulldogs in an 8 p.m. EST game. The Cougars have never defeated the Bulldogs and are 0-4 all-time, the last meeting a 41-61 decision at the Pete Hanna Center.
Charleston is 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the league and is coming off a 64-53 loss at Chattanooga. Jade Hughes (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored 18 points to lead the Cougars, with Tonia Gerty (Port Orange, Fla.) and Ericka Williams (Blackville, S.C.) following with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Cougars were out-rebounded 44-28 in the losing effort; it was the team's second-lowest rebounding output of the season.
Two Cougars are averaging in double-figures in scoring this season with Jade Hughes leading the way at 12.5. Tonia Gerty follows with 11.1, while Deidra Jones leads the team in rebounds with 7.7 a game.
Samford is 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the league after defeating Georgia Southern, 74-49, in its last game. Emily London leads the Bulldogs with 14.0 points per game, while Savannah Hill follows with 11.9. Monica Maxwell paces the team in rebounds with 5.1 a game.
The Cougars opened Southern Conference play 4-0 for the first time in league history. While the Cougars are now 4-1 with the loss to Chattanooga, it is still their best start in league play. Charleston had a five-game winning streak, its longest of the season, snapped with loss to the Mocs Jan. 2 as well.
Charleston travels next to Statesboro, Ga. Saturday, Jan. 9, for a 1 p.m. game against the Georgia Southern Eagles.
