GREENSBORO, N.C. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to No. 21 UNC Greensboro in Sunday afternoon's women's soccer action.
The Cougars fall to 6-8 (3-3 SoCon) while UNCG remain unbeaten in conference play at 11-1-1 (6-0 SoCon).
"It was going to be a matter of how we responded from a tough loss on Friday night," said head coach Christian Michner. "Our team was ready to play though and we played a very tough game against a strong Greensboro team for a full 90 minutes."
The Cougars conceded a two-goal lead and were unable to claw all the way back into the match. UNCG benefited from a 15-7 shot advantage and 11-3 corner-kick margin.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a rocket from 22 yards left into the upper-left corner from the boot of Jaimey Etten.
Tabitha Padgett padded UNCG's lead 3:17 into the second period when she one-touched a pass from Cat Barnekow into the net from inside the six-yard box.
The Cougars responded in the 68th minute when Amanda Raymond (Richmond, Va.) banged in an in-swinging corner kick from Maryam Buazza (Katy, Texas), cutting the score to 2-1.
CofC appeared to equalize in the 89th minute but the play was ruled offside and the goal would not stand. The Cougars couldn't equalize in the remaining moments, however, and the 2-1 tally went final.
"It was a tough weekend on the road for our team but I know it was a progression for us moving forward," said Michner. "I liked how we battled and believe we're positioned to make a run to close the season."
The Cougars complete their three-match road stint on Thursday night with a SoCon bout at Davidson.
