SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Junior Latisha Harris led the College of Charleston women's basketball team with 16 points and sophomore Alexis Hicks made a key block late in the game as the Cougars hung on for a 56-55 win at Wofford Saturday.
Playing in her fourth game of the season Hicks recorded career-highs in points and rebounds with 11 and eight, including five offensive rebounds and two blocks. Fellow sophomore point guard Jillian Brown registered her second double-digit assist game of the season with 10 assists.
The Cougars (4-15, 3-7 SoCon), coming off a tough 35-34 loss at home to Georgia Southern came out strong in the first half with Harris leading the way with eight points and four rebounds. Wofford (9-9, 2-7) came out firing as well, converting five-of-eight on three-pointers and were up as much as 13 at the 9:57 mark of the opening period.
With Harris asserting herself in the post, the Cougars came back and narrowed the Terrier lead to four at 34-30 at halftime.
In the second half the Cougars tightened up on defense, especially on the perimeter, holding Wofford to 1-of-10 shooting on three-pointers in the second period.
In a game with five ties and five lead changes the Cougars and Terriers were tied 52-52 with 1:26 left in the game.
Hicks made a free-throw to put CofC up one and followed that up with a block. Hardy would get a steal on the possession and although the Cougars did not score, on the next Wofford possession they played tough defense and Harris pulled down a rebound and was fouled.
Harris converted one of her four free-throws down the stretch to put the Cougars up 54-52. Wofford got the ball back down four at 56-52 with nine second remaining and would only get one last possession as they converted a three-pointer as time expired to give CofC the 56-55 victory.
For the game the Cougars out-rebounded the Terriers 44-35, including 18 offensive rebounds.
The Cougars return home to host Western Carolina on Monday at 7 p.m. at TD Arena.
