ELON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to Elon in Southern Conference play on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars outshot the Phoenix but couldn't capitalize on their chances.
The Cougars, now 3-8-0, (2-2-0 SoCon) produced a 13-10 shot advantage but couldn't find the net in the affair.
“Elon was pumped and ready to go,” said head coach Christian Michner. “They capitalized on their chances and we didn't. It wasn't until the late moments of the game that we started to string some things together. We had plenty of chances at goal and their keeper made some nice saves but our effort tended to be too little, too late.
“It's about being consistent and working hard for 90 minutes and not taking plays off. In this league anyone can beat anyone and you have to be ready to go day-in and day-out.”
Cougar keeper Eli Sarasola (San Sebastian, Spain) made six saves in the match including a penalty-kick stopping effort.
The Phoenix first scored in the 10th minute when Chelsey Stark and Taylor Glenn managed to get behind the defense. Stark led the run and centered the ball to Glenn who tucked the ball into the left corner of the net.
The insurance marker came in the 62nd minute when Stark was in the right place to collect a rebound off a Sarasola save and slipped the ball into the net.
The Cougars return to SoCon play with a midweek home match with Georgia Southern on Thursday, Oct. 4.CofC and GSU are slated to kick off from Patriots Point at 7 p.m.
