DAVIDSON, N.C. – In the second of three consecutive days in which the Cougars face tough competition on the road, the College of Charleston women's tennis team claimed a resounding, 6-1, victory over former Southern Conference rival Davidson on Sunday at the Knobloch Indoor Tennis Center.
The Cougars (1-1) claimed their first victory of the season after an opening day loss to the Gamecocks of South Carolina on Saturday.
Led by Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) and Mara Argyriou (Limassol, Cyprus), the College wrapped up the doubles point, dispensing of the Wildcat pairing of Crouser/Brunner, 6-2. On court three, the Cougars tandem of Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) also held off Davidson's Stein and Held, 7-6 (7-3).
In singles play, McAmis, Argyriou, Katherine Schofield (Franklin, TN.), Maddox and Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) all ran out winners, while freshman Thai Thompson (Wilmington, N.C.) – playing in her first collegiate match – was brought down by Davidson's Elise Held.
The Cougars won five of six singles points.
“I'm very pleased that we were able to get our first win of the 2014 season,” said College of Charleston Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo. “Davidson is a much-improved team and I expect them to do very well in the Southern Conference. We talked about finishing strong and closing out the second set…I think that's something we did well today. The most important thing is that we improve, and I think today was a big improvement over yesterday.”
Taking center stage for the Cougars was 17 year-old freshman, Mara Argyriou. Argryiou defeated highly-touted Elaina Cummer, 6-3, 6-2 on court number two.
“I'm really happy with the way Mara played today,” said Anastopoulo. “She was upbeat and enthusiastic the entire match – which is impressive for someone her age.”
For CofC, today's match was the second of three-consecutive days in which they will face highly-touted competition on the road. Tomorrow, the Cougars face ACC conference power Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.

On tomorrow's match-up with Wake Forest…
“Tomorrow is going to be very challenging for us. Their probably won't be a more improved team in the country this season than Wake Forest. They have one of the top recruiting classes in the nation and we're looking forward to competing against such a strong team.”
