HARRISONBURG, Va. – Three second-half James Madison goals were enough to put the College of Charleston women's soccer team on the losing side of a Colonial Athletic Association match on a rainy Friday night at University Park.
After an evenly played first half which saw both sides create opportune chances to score, JMU took control in the second period and incessantly applied pressure as a steady drizzle intensified into a downpour during the second period.
“It was really a tale of two halves,” said head coach Christian Michner. “We stepped out prepared and ready to go, and it was a very even match with both sides creating chances in the opening half. We really felt good about our performance at the break, but in the second half we were turned off and James Madison dominated at that point. We just couldn't find our legs in the second half. Congrats to them on a fantastic performance by a well-coached team.”
JMU scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute on a penetrating run by Katie Hyland which traced her through the right side of the box before she crossed a ball across the goal mouth to Jennie Sroba who scored at the far post.
Charleston (5-9-0, 1-4-0 CAA) threatened to equalize with a quality attack over the next 25 minutes, placing four of their six shot attempts on goal and creating three corner kicks in the opening half.
Just under four minutes into the second half, Hyland and Sroba duplicated their first half effort as Hyland once again played a low cross and Sroba one-timed it into the net to put the Dukes up 2-0.
The goal, along with the toughening conditions, effectively took CofC out of their rhythm and the Dukes sured up the result with a corner kick goal in the 66th minute. The ball was sent in by Kelly Kerrigan and scored by Ashley Herndon through a crowd in the box.
JMU's attack-mindedness led to produced 21 shots in the second period, and goalkeeper Lauren Killian made a career-high 12 saves.
Freshman Suzi Vallez made her second start of the season and played a full 90 minutes. Claire Newman, Hope Walker, Hannah Huizenga, and Sarah Cardamone played the full-time as well.
The Cougars remain in the Mid-Atlantic region for further CAA play with a pivotal match at Towson on Sunday, Oct. 10.
“We have to pick our heads up and be ready for another tough road match at Towson on Sunday,” said Michner. “We feel good about where we're at though, and we'll be ready to pick up three points.”
The Cougars and Tigers kick off at 1 p.m. with positioning on the line as the 10 CAA women's soccer teams vie for the six available playoff spots.
