CHARLESTON, S.C. – Despite sophomore Bre Bolden scoring 20 or more points for the sixth time this season, the College of Charleston women's basketball team suffered a 76-65 setback on senior day at TD Arena.
Playing for the final time at home in the maroon and white, seniors Breannah Davis-Bloom, Erin Hall, Christy Hewatt and Mikaela Hopkins were all honored for their contributions to the program during an emotional pre-game ceremony. This group will always be remembered for helping to usher in a new era for CofC basketball, including an unforgettable debut season in the Colonial Athletic Association that saw the Cougars finish with an overall record of 19-15, good enough for third place in conference's regular season standings and semifinals appearances in both the CAA Championship and the Women's Basketball Invitational.
On Sunday, however, the Cougars (5-23, 3-14 CAA) found results more difficult come by as the Seahawks shot 45% and scored 42 points in the paint en route to their ninth conference win of the season. Leading the way for the visitor's was the play of backcourt mates Brie Mobley and Kelva Atkins, who combined for 43 points. Over the course of her last two games, Mobley is averaging 33.0 ppg – a stretch that all but guarantees her CAA Player of the Week honors.
For CofC, it was Bolden who again paced the hosts with another efficient 21-point outing. Also putting in good work on the offensive end was junior forward Jacqueline Luna-Castro, who dropped 16, while Davis-Bloom celebrated her final home game with a career-high 11 points.
For the second-consecutive home outing, the College of Charleston hung tough in the opening stages of the first half and managed to take a three point, 7-4 lead following a transition layup from Luna-Castro at the 15:11 mark. Charleston would again lead by three after a pull-up jumper from Bolden two minutes later, but would never lead again as the visitors took a 40-27 advantage to the locker room at halftime.
While the Cougars would go on to outscore the Seahawks 38-36 in the second-half, the damage was done and despite a late CofC rally, UNCW held firm to walk away with the 76-65 victory.
Up next for The College is a Wednesday night regular season finale at conference leaders James Madison University. The Dukes have lost just twice in CAA play dating back to the start of the 2013-14 season. Stay tuned to CofCSports.com for a full preview.
